Charminar: The Heart of Hyderabad

Charminar, the iconic monument, is to Hyderabad. what the Qutb Minar is to Delhi or the Statue of Liberty is to New York. This 400-year-old heritage site is the most-visited tourist attraction of the city.

The word, Charminar, literally means ‘four minarets’. These minarets are supported by four arches. Charminar is a building made of limestone, granite, pulverised marble and mortar structure.

Which was built in 1591 in the Indian-Islamic architectural style in the year 1591. On top of these is a roof with a stone balcony. There is a total of 149 winding steps to reach its upper floors. The wall of the monument has intricate decorations.

The central gallery has 45 covered prayer seats. There is a large, open space in front to hold more people for the Friday prayers.

Historical roots: Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, built this famous monument.
After he shifted his capital from Golkonda to Hyderabad, a newly formed city at the time.

Locational details: Built in the centre of the city. Charminar is located at the intersection of the historical trade route that connects Golconda markets with the Machhilipatnam port city.

Charminar is mainly famous for its popular markets. It is important for numerous festivals.

The busy, popular market is Laad Bazaar. Laad bazaar is famous for jewellery, and bangles. Pathar Gatti is famous for pearls.

How to reach there: The nearest airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, located about 24 kilometres south of Hyderabad, in Shamshabad.
